Personal Conduct according to the Quran
The Quran is Gods word and is complete with all that mankind needs to know and do for salvation. Aside from belief in God, Judgment Day, the angels, scriptures, and prophets; and observing the 5 daily prayers and the obligatory charity, personal conduct is also an important part of being a Submitter (Muslim.) A Submitter should be noticed by the way he/she presents him/herself to the world. The Quran, the only religious source for Submitters (Muslims) , contains clear instructions to follow on conducting yourself the way God wants us to. By setting a good example to the world, it will give the correct message of Islam (Submission) to those around us.
The Quran on Speech:
Do not subject GOD's name to your casual swearing, that you may appear righteous, pious, or to attain credibility among the people. GOD is Hearer, Knower. [2:224]
GOD does not like the utterance of bad language, unless one is treated with gross injustice. GOD is Hearer, Knower. [4:148]
Do not curse the idols they set up beside GOD, lest they blaspheme and curse GOD, out of ignorance [6:108]
This verse instructs us that we should not curse idols that others set up beside God (ex: Muhammad, Jesus, Krishna, Buddha) because they may curse at God. Also, the idols we may curse may even be Gods prophets and messengers.
You shall not say that you will do anything in the future, without saying, "GOD willing." [18:23-24]
And they avoid vain talk. [23:3, 25:72, 28:55]
And when the ignorant speak to them [the believers], they only utter peace. [25:63]
Walk humbly and lower your voice - the ugliest voice is the donkey's voice. [31:19]
Not equal are the good response and the bad response. You shall resort to the nicest possible response. Thus, the one who used to be your enemy, may become your best friend. [41:34]
In the last three verses above, God emphasizes that we should be nice to people no matter what, speaking peacefully and softly, even in the face of rudeness or ridicule.
Do you not see that GOD has cited the example of the good word as a good tree whose root is firmly fixed, and its branches are high in the sky? It produces its crop every season, as designed by its Lord. GOD thus cites the examples for the people, that they may take heed.[14:24-25]
And the example of the bad word is that of a bad tree chopped at the soil level; it has no roots to keep it standing.[14:26]
You should always investigate rumors first before you believe them, neither should you start rumors.
O you who believe, if a wicked person brings any news to you, you shall first investigate, lest you commit injustice towards some people, out of ignorance, then become sorry and remorseful for what you have done. [49:6]
O you who believe, no people shall ridicule other people, for they may be better than they. Nor shall any women ridicule other women, for they may be better than they. Nor shall you mock one another, or make fun of your names [49:11]
O you who believe, you shall avoid any suspicion, for even a little bit of suspicion is sinful. You shall not spy on one another, nor shall you backbite one another; this is as abominable as eating the flesh of your dead brother. You certainly abhor this. You shall observe GOD. GOD is Redeemer, Most Merciful. [49:12]
Secret conspiracy is the devil's idea, through which he seeks to hurt those who believed [58:10]
The Quran on Debating:
Do not argue with the people of the scripture (Jews, Christians, and Muslims) except in the nicest possible manner - unless they transgress - and say, "We believe in what was revealed to us and in what was revealed to you, and our god and your god is one and the same; to Him we are submitters."[29:46]
You shall invite to the path of your Lord with wisdom and kind enlightenment, and debate with them in the best possible manner. Your Lord knows best who has strayed from His path, and He knows best who are the guided ones.[16:125]
The Quran on Parents:
Your Lord has decreed that you shall not worship except Him, and your parents shall be honored. As long as one or both of them live, you shall never say to them, "Uff" (the slightest gesture of annoyance), nor shall you shout at them; you shall treat them amicably. [17:23]
The Quran on Friends:
O you who believe, do not befriend outsiders who never cease to wish you harm; they even wish to see you suffer. Hatred flows out of their mouths and what they hide in their chests is far worse [3:118]
He has instructed you in the scripture that: if you hear GOD's revelations being mocked and ridiculed, you shall not sit with them, unless they delve into another subject. Otherwise, you will be as guilty as they are [4:140, 6:68]
GOD enjoins you only from befriending those who fight you because of religion, evict you from your homes, and band together with others to banish you. You shall not befriend them. Those who befriend them are the transgressors. [60:9]
God does not forbid us from making friends with any person of any belief if they meet certian criteria. What God forbids us from doing is that if people wish to mock Gods revelations (Quran), then as a believer, you should not sit with them until they change the subject. God also forbids us from those who mock Submission (Islam), harm or fight you because of it, even to the point of eviction or warfare. You should also avoid people wo wish to see the believers suffer. Let God deal with them, for He most surely will.
GOD does not enjoin you from befriending those who do not fight you because of religion, and do not evict you from your homes. You may befriend them and be equitable towards them. GOD loves the equitable.[60:8]
The Quran on Greetings:
When greeted with a greeting, you shall respond with a better greeting or at least an equal one. GOD reckons all things. [4:86]
When those who believe in our revelations come to you, you shall say, "Salamun `Alaykum (Peace be upon you) [6:54]
O you who believe, do not enter homes other than yours without permission from their inhabitants, and without greeting them [24:27, 24:61]
The Quran on Honesty:
...And they (the righteous) keep their word whenever they make a promise... [2:177]
O you who believe, you shall be absolutely equitable, and observe GOD, when you serve as witnesses, even against yourselves, or your parents, or your relatives. Whether the accused is rich or poor, GOD takes care of both. Therefore, do not be biased by your personal wishes [4:135, 25:72]
You shall not touch the orphans' money except in the most righteous manner, until they reach maturity. You shall give full weight and full measure when you trade, equitably. We do not burden any soul beyond its means. You shall be absolutely just when you bear witness, even against your relatives. You shall fulfill your covenant with GOD [4:135]
When it comes to deposits entrusted to them (the believers), as well as any agreements they make, they are trustworthy. [23:8]
Do not abuse the oaths among you, lest you slide back after having a strong foothold, then you incur misery. Such is the consequence of repelling from the path of GOD (by setting a bad example); you incur a terrible retribution.[16:94]
The Quran on Anger and its forms:
And do not aggress; GOD dislikes the aggressors. [5:87]
Therefore, counter their evil works with goodness; we are fully aware of their claims. [23:96, 28:54]
And when angered they (the believers) forgive. [42:37]
The Quran on Food:
You shall eat from that upon which GOD's name has been pronounced, if you truly believe in His revelations. [6:118, 121]
Say, "I do not find in the revelations given to me any food that is prohibited for any eater except: (1) carrion, (2) running blood, (3) the meat of pigs, for it is contaminated, and (4) the meat of animals blasphemously dedicated to other than GOD." If one is forced (to eat these), without being deliberate or malicious, then your Lord is Forgiver, Most Merciful. [6:145]
O children of Adam eat and drink moderately; Surely; He does not love the gluttons. [7:31]
The blind is not to be blamed, the crippled is not to be blamed, nor is the handicapped to be blamed, just as you are not to be blamed for eating at your homes, or the homes of your fathers, or the homes of your mothers, or the homes of your brothers, or the homes of your sisters, or the homes of your fathers' brothers, or the homes of your fathers' sisters, or the homes of your mothers' brothers, or the homes of your mothers' sisters, or the homes that belong to you and you possess their keys, or the homes of your friends. You commit nothing wrong by eating together or as individuals... [24:61]
The Quran on Activities:
O you who believe, intoxicants, and gambling, and the altars of idols, and the games of chance are abominations of the devil; you shall avoid them, that you may succeed. The devil wants to provoke animosity and hatred among you through intoxicants and gambling, and to distract you from remembering GOD, and from observing the Contact Prayers (Salat) [5:90, 91]
The Quran on Spending:
You shall not keep your hand stingily tied to your neck, nor shall you foolishly open it up, lest you end up blamed and sorry. [17:29, 25:67]
The Quran on Homes:
O you who believe, do not enter homes other than yours without permission from their inhabitants, and without greeting them. This is better for you, that you may take heed.If you find no one in them, do not enter them until you obtain permission. If you are told, "Go back," you must go back. This is purer for you. GOD is fully aware of everything you do. You commit no error by entering uninhabited homes wherein there is something that belongs to you. GOD knows everything you reveal, and everything you conceal. [24:27-29]
O you who believe, permission must be requested by your servants and the children who have not attained puberty (before entering your rooms). This is to be done in three instances - before the Dawn Prayer, at noon when you change your clothes to rest, and after the Night Prayer. These are three private times for you. At other times, it is not wrong for you or them to mingle with one another [24:58]
The Quran on Dress:
O children of Adam, you shall be clean and dress nicely when you go to the masjid [7:31]
Tell the believing men that they shall subdue their eyes (and not stare at the women), and to maintain their chastity. This is purer for them and tell the believing women to subdue their eyes, and maintain their chastity. They shall not reveal any parts of their bodies, except that which is necessary [24:30-31]
The Quran on Arrogance:
The worshipers of the Most Gracious are those who tread the earth gently [25:63]
You shall not treat the people with arrogance, nor shall you roam the earth proudly Walk humbly [31:18-19]
Nor (you should) be proud of anything He has bestowed upon you. [57:23]
The Quran on Rights/Injustice:
When gross injustice befalls them, they stand up for their rights. Although the just requital for an injustice is an equivalent retribution, GOD rewards those who pardon and maintain righteousness. He does not love the unjust. Certainly, those who stand up for their rights, when injustice befalls them, are not committing any error. The wrong ones are those who treat the people unjustly, and resort to aggression without provocation. These have incurred a painful retribution. Resorting to patience and forgiveness reflects a true strength of character. [42:39-43]
The Quran on Seating:
O you who believe, if you are told, "Please make room," you shall make room for each other to sit. GOD will then make room for you. If you are asked to get up and move, get up and move. GOD raises those among you who believe, and those who acquire knowledge to higher ranks [58:11]
Quran on Righteousness:
Righteousness is not turning your faces towards the east or the west. Righteous are those who believe in GOD, the Last Day, the angels, the scripture, and the prophets; and they give the money, cheerfully, to the relatives, the orphans, the needy, the traveling alien, the beggars, and to free the slaves; and they observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) and give the obligatory charity (Zakat); and they keep their word whenever they make a promise; and they steadfastly persevere in the face of persecution, hardship, and war. These are the truthful; these are the righteous. [2:177]
Four Important Verses from the Quran:
The life of this world is no more than illusion and vanity, while the abode of the Hereafter is far better for the righteous [6:32]
Remember your ultimate goal in life and let that guide your actions
Anything that happens on earth, or to you, has already been recorded, even before the creation. This is easy for GOD to do. Thus, you should not grieve over anything you miss, nor be proud of anything He has bestowed upon you. GOD does not love those who are boastful, proud. [57:22-23]
Do not be sad or excited over anything you miss or receive. All comes from God.
Tell My servants to treat each other in the best possible manner, for the devil will always try to drive a wedge among them. Surely, the devil is man's most ardent enemy. [17:53]
In general, this should be the rule to guide your conduct and the conduct of all people.
All praise is due to God, Lord of the Universe.
