Righteousness of Thoughts

[67:13]  Whether you keep your utterances secret, or declare them, He is fully aware of the innermost thoughts.

Our declarations and actions, with no doubt, are among the known signs that speak for us as individuals in the public eye. Besides our looks and our garments, they are the visual, or the mirror of who we are. People we interact with are able to know and judge us by analyzing our behavior. What they see and hear from us is the image they will eventually store about us! Humans, in general, and irrespective of their religious background or lack thereof, care about this image. They spend a good amount of effort towards this image and to how they are perceived by others. They try their best to beautify their words and actions as long as they are heard or witnessed.

Our hidden thoughts and deepest secrets have no place in this whole process. They are of no value to this human scale of judgment! If there were any available technology that exposed and read man's mind and secrets, we definitely would become very conscious about all of our thoughts. But there is not, and we are free to generate and harbor whatever kinds of thoughts we wish.

God, in His final and poven word, the Quran, teaches us that He has a divine power of reading our innermost thoughts and knowing our deepest secrets. While we cannot read or interpret each others' internal thoughts or intentions, God almighty does have this supreme power. He is absolutely fully aware of every single detail in them, past, present, and future ones:

[59:22]  He is the One GOD; there is no other god beside Him. Knower of all secrets and declarations. He is the Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

[28:69]  Your Lord knows the innermost thoughts hidden in their chests, as well as everything they declare.

[64:4]  He knows everything in the heavens and the earth, and He knows everything you conceal and everything you declare. GOD is fully aware of the innermost thoughts.

No matter how well we are able to keep our thoughts undeclared, they are an open book for our Creator:

[11:5]  Indeed, they hide their innermost thoughts, as if to keep Him from knowing them. In fact, as they cover themselves with their clothes, He knows all their secrets and declarations. He knows the innermost thoughts.

[4:108]  They hide from the people, and do not care to hide from GOD, though He is with them as they harbor ideas He dislikes. GOD is fully aware of everything they do.

God has also clearly warned us that our most internal and deep thoughts are vital to the growth of our souls and to our salvation. Just like our declarations, choices, and actions, we are fully responsible for these secrets. The records we will read on the Day of Judgment and that we will be held accountable for itemize all these secrets, and they will all be exposed. These verses simply teach us all that:

[43:80]  Do they think that we do not hear their secrets and conspiracies? Yes indeed; our messengers are with them, recording.

[2:284]  To GOD belongs everything in the heavens and the earth. Whether you declare your innermost thoughts, or keep them hidden, GOD holds you responsible for them. He forgives whomever He wills, and punishes whomever He wills. GOD is Omnipotent.

[47:29]  Did those who harbor doubts in their hearts think that GOD will not bring out their evil thoughts?

[62:8]  Say, "The death that you are trying to evade will catch up with you sooner or later. Then you will be returned to the Knower of all secrets and declarations, then He will inform you of everything you had done."

[9:105]  Say, "Work righteousness; GOD will see your work, and so will His messenger and the believers. Ultimately,  you will be returned to the Knower of all secrets and declarations, then He will inform you of everything you had done."

[86:8]  He is certainly able to resurrect him.
[86:9]  The day all secrets become known.

God has cited for us many examples of certain hidden thoughts that are very detrimental to the growth of our souls. The evil thoughts of the disbelievers as well as of the hypocrites who harbor doubts about God and try to hide their ideologies from the believers are among these cited examples. Hiding these thoughts deep in their chests is not of any benefit for them, nor will it alter their records or destiny:

[4:81]  They pledge obedience, but as soon as they leave you, some of them harbor intentions contrary to what they say. GOD records their innermost intentions. You shall disregard them, and put your trust in GOD. GOD suffices as an advocate.

        Appearances May Be Deceiving
[2:204]  Among the people, one may impress you with his utterances concerning this life, and may even call upon GOD to witness his innermost thoughts, while he is a most ardent opponent.

[3:119]  Here you are loving them, while they do not love you, and you believe in all the scripture. When they meet you they say, "We believe," but as soon as they leave, they bite their fingers out of rage towards you. Say, "Die in your rage." GOD is fully aware of the innermost thoughts.

[4:62]  How will it be when a disaster hits them, as a consequence of their own works? They will come to you then and swear by GOD: "Our intentions were good and righteous!"
[4:63]  GOD is fully aware of their innermost intentions. You shall ignore them, enlighten them, and give them good advice that may save their souls.

[48:6]  And He will requite the hypocrite men and women and the idol worshiping men and women, for they have harbored evil thoughts about GOD. Their evil will backfire against them. For GOD is angry with them, condemns them, and has prepared for them Gehenna. What a miserable destiny!

[31:23]  As for those who disbelieve, do not be saddened by their disbelief. To us is their ultimate return, then we will inform them of everything they had done. GOD is fully aware of the innermost thoughts.

[6:27]  If only you could see them when they face the hellfire! They would say then, "Woe to us. Oh, we wish we could go back, and never reject our Lord's revelations, and join the believers."
[6:28]  As a matter of fact, (they only say this because) their secrets have been exposed. If they go back, they will commit exactly the same crimes.* They are liars.

Evil or righteous, our thoughts and innermost secrets are a very powerful representation of our continuous battle with Satan. We strive to stick to all the standards of righteousness defined by God in His final Scripture, but because of our human weakness, Satan, sometimes, manages to encourage us to generate some inner thoughts, ideas, or feelings that are not along the lines of this righteousness. Not only will this tarnish our truthfulness as believers, but it will also regress our souls and interfere with our redemption. Just a few examples of these unrighteous thoughts we are apt to harbor are suspicion, harmful and baseless assumptions, fearing anything or any entity other than God, envy, jealousy, hatred, unrighteous scheming to reach unrighteous goals. All these negative thoughts and feelings are sinful.

Reflecting on all the above messages and examples from the Quran, one concludes that the righteousness of our internal thoughts and secrets adds up, with no doubt, to our records. We are held accountable for them. While we are striving to be truthful and righteous through the correct utterances and actions, we are obligated to simultaneously work hard on the beauty of our thoughts. We should constantly purify them, and let go and repent for all the negative or harmful ones. This indicates how we truly observe God and completes our righteousness. The redemption of one's soul is the fruit of both righteous inner thoughts as well as righteous declarations and actions.

[2:235].... You should know that GOD knows your innermost thoughts, and observe Him. You should know that GOD is Forgiver, Clement.

[17:25]  Your Lord is fully aware of your innermost thoughts. If you maintain righteousness, He is Forgiver of those who repent.

Peaceful Friday, salaam and God bless you.
