How

Unappreciative

is the Human

Being

  by Fatimah Gorin

Have you ever counted all the times that you have

complained in a day? You are constantly asking

yourself, why did this happen to me? Why am I a

problem magnet? Why can't I be more like the

person next door? The human being spends most

of their time complaining about what they do not

have and how they are constantly unhappy. If you

believe in God, you are appreciative and content

with what you do have and you put your trust in

God that no matter what situation you are in, it is

the best for you because God is the Most Merciful

and is in full control of everything. Sincere faith in

God means that you do not constantly complain

but try to understand the wisdom in what you have

and do your best to enjoy it. For example, most

people would get upset if they got a glass of water

and it was filled only half-way. The question would

arise as to why the cup is half empty? Another way.

of looking at the situation is by being thankful to

God for that half glass of water and by realizing

that it is at least half full and not totally empty.

The first step in being appreciative is to put

yourself in a position where you have nothing and

at that time you will realize how God's provisions,

whether they be food, transportation, water, or

even your friends are a great blessing.

Joseph

By Sheila and Melissa Rad

The life of each messenger of God is

an interesting story with many lessons

for us. Joseph was Jacob’s son and

had eleven brothers. One day, Joseph

came to his father and said. “Father,

I had a dream last night

where I saw eleven planets and the sun

and the moon prostrating in front of me.

” Jacob told Joseph to keep

his dream a secret and to not tell

his brothers.

Since Jacob liked Joseph more

than his other brothers, his brothers

became jealous and decided to kill

Joseph. But. they didn't realize that

those who believe in God are blessed

with God's assurance and protection.

God saved Joseph from his brothers' evil

schemes and gave Joseph a very high

position as the treasurer of

Egypt’s government. During Seven years

of terrible drought and famine,

Joseph was in charge of

distributing all the food to the needy

families who came to him for food.

One day, Joseph's brothers came

to him and asked him for food. They

did not recognize Joseph Until Joseph

told them who he was. His

brothers felt ashamed and asked

God for forgiveness.

There are many lessons in this messenger’s

life for the seekers. Among them, we need to

put our trust in God and realize that

God protects and supports those who

believe In Him.

DEAR SEBASTIAN

(This Dear Sebastian column is a continuation of a response to a letter received from a 'Seeker of the Truth' printed in the June l997 issue of the Elite about women and Islam. Enjoy!)

Dear 'Seeker of the Truth',

Praise be to Allah, it's certainly time to clarify certain issues in regards to women in Islam. There are so many points that we will not be able to cover them all in one issue.

As far as the Creator is concerned, women are absolutely, positively without a doubt equal to men. In the Quran, chapter Ali Imran (The Amramites), God supports this fact in verse 195 (directly talking with us) "I never fail to reward any worker among you for any work you do, be you male or female, you are equal to one another."

Are you listening? God is telling you and me (men and women) that we are equal to one another. We must remember nothing bad is from the Creator. Hence, the problem between men and women in terms of equality and justice is the work of mankind supported by Satan.

Further supporting this equality issue, Allah indicates in chapter Al-Nesa (Women) in verse 124, "As for those who lead a righteous life, male or female, while believing, they enter paradise without the slightest injustice."

My dear friend, there are overwhelming numbers of verses supporting this fact. In addition, in chapter Al-Bara'ah (Ultimatum), verse7l and 72, Allah illustrates not only the character of women in Islam, but that there are no gender differences as to the outcome of the women: "'The believing men and the believing women are allies of one another. They advocate righteousness and forbid evil, they obey God and his messenger. These (men and women equally) will be showered with God's mercy. God is Almighty, Most Wise. God promises the believing men and the believing women (both equally) gardens with flowing streams, wherein they abide forever and magnificent mansions in the gardens of Eden. God's blessing and approval are even greater. This is the greatest triumphs." We must distance ourselves from anyone or any other source of information that differs from this fact. These verses only serve as guidance. They are the truth, not man-made, and certainly not coordinated by Satan.

My dear friend, as the final seal of this subject, Allah re-emphasizes on the equality of his creations (men and women) in chapter Al-Ahzaab, Parties), verse 35, "'The submitting men, the submitting women, the believing men, the believing women, the obedient men, the obedient women, the truthful men, the truthful women, the steadfast men, the steadfast women, the reverent men, the reverent women, the charitable men, the charitable women, the fasting men, the fasting women, the chaste men, the chaste women, and the men who commemorate God frequently and the commemorating women; God has prepared for them forgiveness and a great recompense.

However, we ought to remember also that although God created men and women equally, we are certainly endowed with unique qualities. In chapter Al-Nesa, (Women), verse 32, God specifically explains this phenomena; "You shall not covet the qualities bestowed upon each other by God, the men enjoy certain qualities and the women enjoy certain qualities. You may implore God to shower you with His grace. God is fully aware of all things."

My dear seeker of the truth, we have only scratched the surface of this huge subject matter (women in Islam). However, I do hope indeed that, although brief, this answered some of you immediate concerns.

Sebastian

All other issues and questions received will be answered in the following issues of The Elite, inshallah.
